CBD for Pets

Do pets really benefit from CBD?

Yes! Like humans - dogs, cats, and other mammals also have an endocannabinoid system. Adding CBD to their routine helps support your pet's ability to maintain homeostasis.

Our whole-plant hemp extract contains many more beneficial compounds than just CBD. Including additional detectable cannabinoids, Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, and antioxidants - all of which support long-term health.

Will CBD get my pet high? Can they overdose?

Nope. Not possible.

Hemp and cannabis are pretty similar to look at but under the proverbial hood, they are very different.

Hemp plants contain no more than 0.3% THC. That's the compound in cannabis that causes you to feel high... and it's naturally present in such a tiny amount that can't get anyone high.

We go a step further and use a hemp extract that has all THC removed. (Also known as a broad spectrum extract.)

Our hemp extract and CBD are perfectly pet-safe, non-habit forming, and non-psychoactive.
The National Animal Supplement Council recently did a first-of-it's-kind study on the tolerability of CBD products in healthy dogs and the results showed no negative impacts over 90 days of daily use.

We’ve worked with thousands of owners and veterinarians and we have only ever seen positive things happen when pets are given CBD. It might surprise you that for pets (and humans alike) there is no negative consequence to consuming too much CBD, except you'll have used up all of your chews!

Of course, while nothing serious can occur, we always advocate administering the recommended serving size to avoid any unforeseen complications.

Should your pet eat an entire package (let me guess, you have a labrador) please consult your veterinarian and be possibly prepared for an upset tummy, simply from eating too many chews!

Where does your CBD come from?

Our CBD comes hemp grown and processed with organic practices in the USA.

You can learn more at Hemp 101 or check out the quality and purity of our products on our Lab Test page.

Can I give CBD to my healthy pet?

Yes! Although many pet owners seek out CBD for a specific reason, all of our formulas are suitable for supporting homeostasis.

Can I give CBD to my pet with ___ ailment or medication?

A friendly reminder - we're not veterinarians, and we recommend seeking your pet's vet's advice especially when it comes to introducing anything new to your pet's treatment plan.

While plenty of pet owners incorporate CBD into their pet's wellness routine, CBD is still relatively new and many vets aren't familiar with it. So, if your vet has any questions about our ingredients or our formulas, we'd be happy to an

Does CBD work instantly?

You'll notice that we say this a lot but it's true - every pet is different.

Some pets will experience the benefits of CBD in as little as five minutes, but others don't start to respond until after a week or two of daily servings while CBD builds up in their system. Typically, pet owners see some response within 30 - 45 minutes.

If you don't notice any changes within an hour, try giving your pet another half-serving (and if your pet is particularly anxious or active, try giving a little bit more)— and understand it may take a few days to recognize your pet's improvement!

If you have specific questions, please feel free to contact us and we'll help you figure out the right routine for your pet.

How to Use our Products

How much CBD should I give my pet?

If you've never used CBD with your pet before, we recommend starting with the following:

For Dogs: 2mg of CBD per 10lbs of weight

For Cats: 3mg of CBD per 10lbs of weight

Observe your pet after giving CBD, it's normal to do some trial and error to find the right dose for them.

CBD can be given as-needed or as part of a daily wellness routine.

My pet refuses to try it... help!

Never fear - we're an innovative crew here at Austin and Kat so we have a few work-arounds that usually do the trick.

Tips for Serving Chews
If you have a picky eater, try smearing a little bit of something tasty like peanut butter on the chew. You can also crumble the chew into a bit of milk or broth.

Tips for Serving Oils
Many pets will lick CBD oil straight off a small dish, but if you're still having trouble, mix the oil with a small amount of food (we recommend peanut butter again!) Or drop oil onto another treat they already like a biscuit or something freeze-dried, works well.

Some creative geniuses even hollow out a bite of banana to serve CBD oil to their picky pets. 🤯

Should I use CBD oils or chews?

Our chews and oils contain the same helpful CBD molecule and use the same broad-spectrum hemp extract.

Choosing between chews and oils is a matter of your pet's needs & your lifestyle.

Some factors to consider are..

CBD CHEWS

  • Convenient Dosing
Pre-portioned soft chews are easy to serve whole or break in half.
  • Looks like a "treat"
Pets love the peanut butter and apple base we use for all our soft chew products.
  • Easy to take on-the-go
No fuss or worries about spilling - take our soft chews with you anywhere.

CBD OILS

  • Versatile Dosing
Measured droppers let you give your pet the exact amount of CBD they need.
  • Easy to mix in food/treats
Great for pets that have trouble chewing, or are picky eaters.
  • Faster Acting
CBD oil can get to work a bit faster than chews, which need time to digest.

Ultimately, the choice is up to you. And remember, you can use BOTH!

Can CBD oils be used as a topical?

Many of our oils have fish or animal-derived ingredients, and for this reason we do not recommend applying them topically.

However, our minimal ingredient 600mg or 1200mg hemp and MCT oils may be used topically. Just be sure to wipe your dog or cat dry after allowing some time for it to absorb.

How much is a "scoop" of the powders? Where is the scoop?

In our effort to be as environmentally friendly as possible, so we do not include a scoop with our powders.

Instead, we've standardized the serving to a common household measurement - a half-teaspoon.

If you are using our Green Lipped Mussel powder, we recommend a half-teaspoon per 50 lbs of pet weight.

For all other powders, we recommend a half-teaspoon per 25 lbs of pet weight.

What if I eat a CBD chew?

Asking for a friend? No judgement here! You’re now an official member of the Austin and Kat pack. Welcome! ;)

Our "chews" are made with human-grade ingredients, so go ahead and keep snacking. Just don't be surprised if your pup gets a little jealous.

Storage & Recycling

What is the shelf life of a CBD chew?

You can store your chews in their sealed package for up to one and a half years or until the expiration date passes (and here’s a little secret—if you freeze them, they’ll last for up to two years).

And let’s be honest—your pet is going to love them (and benefit from them) so much that you’ll be reordering long before they expire.

As a reminder, don’t store these in warm places, please! (That means you won’t want to keep them in that hot car in the middle of summer - we are looking at you, Arizona pups.)

What is the shelf life of a CBD oil?

Oils containing animal-derived products (fish oils, green-lipped, mussel, etc.) should be used within 90 days of opening

All other formulas can be stored in a cool, dry place up to a year after opening.

We recommend refrigerating our oils only if you're not planning on finishing the bottle within 4-6 months of opening. (And oils with animal-derived ingredients should still be used within 90 days.)

Be sure to shake well before every use!
Formulas containing coconut oil may need to come to room temperature to mix back together easily.

What is the shelf life of the supplement powders?

Health supplement powders are best used within 90 days of opening

Be sure to reseal the package and store in a cool, dry place.

Should I refrigerate my CBD oil?

Simply storing our CBD oils in a cool, dry place is enough.

We recommend refrigerating our oils only if you're not planning on finishing the bottle within 4-6 months of opening. However, oils containing animal-derived products (fish oils, green-lipped, mussel, etc.) should be used within 90 days of opening

Be sure to shake well before every use!
Formulas containing coconut oil may need to come to room temperature to mix back together normally.

Why is the oil bottle dark?

We package our oil in a dark, airtight bottle to allow for the most efficient shelf life.

CBD and other cannabinoids degrade over time. Light, heat, and air can accelerate the process and reduce its efficacy.

Is your packaging recyclable?

Austin and Kat strives to use packaging materials that are highly functional in addition to being environmentally friendly.

When possible, we encourage you to consider ways to repurpose packaging before recycling or discarding it.

CBD Oil Boxes: Recycle with other clean cardboard and paper products.

CBD Oil Bottles: Glass bottle and dropper are recyclable with other clean glass items. Remove and discard plastic tamper seal and labels from bottle. Separate glass dropper from plastic/rubber top (give the dropper a gentle wiggle & tug and it'll come right out.) Discard plastic/rubber dropper cap.

Shipping Boxes: Remove and discard any shipping labels/tape. Recycle boxes with other clean cardboard and paper products.

Chew & Topper Pouches: These items are made of recycled materials and have reached the end of their life, not recyclable.

Inside Our Products

Austin and Kat US-based, independent small batch natural pet supplements for dogs and cats

Where are your products made?

Every batch of Austin and Kat is formulated and made by us in small batches at our "MAKERY" in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.

Do you lab test your products & ingredients?

Yes! Thank you for asking. We go through a lot of trouble to make sure our products are safe and effective - and that includes rigorous lab-testing at every step.

First, raw plant material is tested for an exhaustive collection of pesticides, herbicides, microbes, and mycotoxins.

Next, our hemp oil extract is re-tested for contaminants and heavy metals, and then analyzed for a consistent cannabinoid and terpene profile.

Finally, our finished products are 3rd-party tested to ensure we’ve hit our marks across the board for potency and safety.

See our lab tests here.

Is your hemp organic?

You bet!

Although it's not USDA-certified organic (certification is a long, expensive process). The hemp we use is grown and cultivated according to 100% organic practices that go beyond what the USDA requires to qualify as organic.

I'm looking for Guaranteed Analysis or Nutrition Facts.

Because Austin and Kat products are considered "dosage form animal health products," we do not use the guaranteed analysis format which is for pet foods.

Instead, our labels feature the Product Facts panel that lists our active and inactive ingredients. This is in compliance with the guidelines from our friends at the NASC (National Animal Supplement Council.)

Due to the guidelines surrounding pet supplements and CBD in particular, we are responsible for ensuring that our products are not confused with pet treats or pet foods. That's why we do not offer a guaranteed analysis or nutrition facts panel on our packaging or website.

How are ingredients listed?

Active ingredients are listed in descending order according to weight or volume.

Inactive ingredients, however, are listed in alphabetical order.

I don't recognize this ingredient...

Don’t you worry - our rockstar science team has broken it all down for you on our ingredients page.

If you want even more details or are curious behind our thought process behind them all, reach out to us at ingredientsmatter@austinandkat.com.

What are inactive ingredients?

Inactive ingredients include everything from preservatives and thickeners to flavors and more. Most often, they’re stabilizers to help the product last longer.

Everything in our products, including the inactive ingreients, come from nature. So you won't see any synthetic preservatives, fillers, additives for color... Everything we use has a purpose. Your pet's health comes first!

What is Longvida® Curcumin?

Some natural ingredients are even better with the help of SCIENCE.

We only use the best for our pets - and that includes working with industry leaders to incorporate their proprietary ingredients in our formulas when possible.

For instance, we don't just use turmeric, we use: Longvida® Optimized Turmeric. The gold standard for innovative and effective turmeric extracts. Specially developed by university neuroscientists to easily cross the Blood Brain Barrier (BBB), delivering ACTIVE antioxidants throughout the body - including the brain & nervous system.

Longvida® is the most clinically cited standardized extract available for both people and pets. It’s designed to keep the natural compounds in turmeric ACTIVE in your body, for much longer (one daily dose is good enough).

This optimized antioxidant blend has been recognized in clinical trials for over 15 years, enhancing memory and cognition, improving vascular health, and promoting long-term inflammatory health in senior citizens.

Why did I get an alert that my payment couldn't be processed?

The most common types of payment errors are easy to fix - your billing address may need an update or your credit card has expired.

To update your card, or billing address, or switch to a different payment method, please see our guide here.

Occasionally, we also see card decline errors. Card declines can happen for various reasons. When we send a payment request to your bank, their automated systems decide whether to approve the charge or not.

Because these factors are constantly changing, a card that worked previously might be declined in the future. Even if all your card details are correct, and you've made successful payments before, a bank's fraud detection systems can sometimes reject a transaction anyway.

Decline notifications are generic, so we don't get specific information about why your payment didn't go through.

If you've double-checked that all your card information is accurate and your account balance is sufficient, it's best to get in touch with your bank directly. (You can find their contact number on the back of your card). Ask them for more details and request that they allow future charges from Austin and Kat (Chilled Black Dog). Only the account holder can make these requests, so we are unable to call the bank on your behalf.
