If there’s one thing all dogs are good at, it’s sleep. Between naps and nights, the average pup snoozes somewhere between 12-14 hours a day, and every one of those 40 winks plays a big part in keeping them happy and healthy.
But just like the rest of us, our puppers can sometimes have a tough time getting the rest they need. Usually, it’s a temporary thing caused by a change in routine or new surroundings. But if sleeplessness continues for more than a night or two, it might be a symptom of something else like an anxiety disorder, bladder problem, dementia, illness or injury, or chronic pain.
What Prevents Dogs from Falling Asleep?
The occasional rough night probably isn’t anything to worry about, but if your four-legged friend is consistently having a hard time falling asleep, there may be an underlying issue.
Possible causes of restlessness:
- Pent-Up Energy
- Night-Time Critters
- Emotional Turmoil
- Physical Problems
- Side Effects of Medications
It's a good idea to check with your trusty vet before you change any of your pet's medications and switch to CBD.
Can CBD Help Your Dog Fall Asleep?
CBD oil can help with sleep by treating some of the underlying causes of restlessness which can help your dog ease into sleep easier.
- Anxiety: Science is showing that CBD can chemically reduce the symptoms of anxiety in mammals by acting on the receptors in the brain that cause the flight or fight response. Reducing your pup's anxiety before bed can help them relax and ease into sleep better.
- Arthritis and Joint Pain: CBD is a superstar at reducing inflammation in the joints which can relieve the pressure and thus reduce much of their pain. When your dog doesn't the achy pain in their joints anymore, they can focus on what they really need: sleep.
- Allergies and Itchiness: Studies have shown that CBD oil can reduce dermatitis and asthma that comes from seasonal allergies. That way your dog can breathe easier and sleep calmly through the night.
Can CBD Help Your Dog Stay Asleep?
There isn’t a ton of research on CBD and staying asleep, but what exists is pretty encouraging. We found one study, for example, where CBD improved the sleep scores of two-thirds of patients with anxiety or sleep issues. Tests on rats, on the other hand, found that CBD appears to “increase total sleep time,” and participants who took CBD in a project to treat insomnia slept much more than those who got a placebo.
Scientists have also found that patients who take CBD suffer fewer bouts of what’s called REM sleep behavior disorder, which is what happens when our pups’ muscles get stuck in the “on” position and they thrash in their sleep.
Add it all up and it seems pretty obvious: Whether they’re tossing and turning or just having a hard time getting some shut-eye, CBD may be just the thing to help our dogs wake up rested and ready to chase balls, sticks, and everything else life throws at them!
What to Look for in CBD Products?
Make sure the product you buy is of high quality and from a reputable brand. Your best friend deserves the best and there's nothing worse than spending your money on products that don't work.
Broad/Full Spectrum CBD from Hemp Oil
Full spectrum means the oil has the added benefit of the entourage effect, meaning the CBD works in tandem with the other cannabinoids, terpenes, and lipids to make the CBD more effective. Broad-spectrum is the same as full-spectrum, except all traces of THC have been removed.
3rd Party Lab Tested
3rd party just means a laboratory that isn't associated with the company tested the CBD to ensures the amount of CBD on the label matches what's in the product. To guarantee the efficacy of the CBD that you buy, check the 3rd party test results. All reputable companies have it listed online or will happily give it to you if you ask.
Organically Grown Hemp
Hemp is a natural bioaccumulator, meaning it absorbs nutrients as well as contaminants from the soil as it grows. Make sure the CBD you buy is from a farm that uses organic practices to ensure there are no pesticides or metals in your CBD.
